The Valle de Itata in southern Chile has brought us some of the most intriguing wines we've seen in awhile. Marcel-Lapierre-trained French transplant Louis Antoine Luyt has taken to this isolated land searching out old vines of País, an unheralded variety known in the US as Mission and planted by Franciscan monks to provide sacramental wine. Own-rooted and dry-farmed, they make for a pretty, medium-bodied wine with raspberry and cherry fruit, brambly tannins, a dry, chalky background, and refreshing acidity.
