Claude de Nicolay, winemaker and owner of Chandon de Briailles, is a living legend and one of the most talented women in Bourgogne. The 2018 Pernand-Vergelesses Ile de Vergelesses 1er Cru comes from an east-facing hill equally balanced between clay and limestone, averaging 45-year-old vines. (It was supposed to be classified Grand Cru in 1936 but was denied because it can suffer in cooler vintages. Given the recent climate in Burgundy, and on Earth, that's no longer an issue.)
"Unwinding in the glass with notes of raspberries, plums and cherries, complemented by hints of warm spices, dark chocolate and rose petal, the 2018 Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Ile de Vergelesses is medium to full-bodied, supple and layered, with a charming core of fruit underpinned by an elegantly muscular chassis of powdery tannin." - Wine Advocate
