The historic Cantine del Pino is named for a pine tree planted by the founding owner, Domizio Cavazza, who on assuming Directorship of the Royal Enological School in Alba in 1888 redrew the wine map of Piemonte by settling in Barbaresco rather than Barolo. Coming into the Vacca family upon Cavazza’s death in 1913, its grapes have continued to make consistently glorious wine in that delicate, rose-scented Barbaresco way, at once powerful and intimate. It sports black cherry, strawberry, raspberry, and black pepper, with a whiff of cigars on a crowded, balanced, busy palate bowling along on firm, lively tannins. With everything harmoniously in its place, it is a wine with a long way to go, if you have the self-control to let it get there.
